Antique Brass Binnacle Lamp Round Insert Marked E. Miller & Co. Wood Swing Bale This is a great little antique find. Came from a local family estate auction in the Midwest. It's extremely well made. Very well-crafted. Solid Brass. I thought it looked interesting. I have never seen a lamp like this and had no idea of its exact use. Just knew it had a quality look. Loved the rich brassy patina. Originally thought is was an early light for an automobile or perhaps a really expensive Miner's lamp, I know nothing about early lighting. Zip. I showed it to my good friend who quickly identified this as part of a Binnacle from a ship. A big ship. Part of the compass. And is probably from a commercial boat, maybe from the Navy. It tall and the cylindrical form is great. It's heavy, too. Very weighty to hold. Measures: 9"H by 3 1/4"Base Approx. 10 1/4H Extended Bale Missing Original Curved Eisenglass Insert Stem Marked: E. Miller & Co. Weight: 1 lb. 13.5oz American Naval? British? T are some apologies and old repairs to the piece. The original glass was replaced with some kind of early curved hard plastic. T are soldered spots on the round burner and to the base of the reflector. The stem of the burner turns with ease and t's a wick! I love that wick. Sweet touch. The little brass clip which holds the reflector has also been repaired at some time. And t is some repair to the bottom base of the insert. Around the little footers. The insert is original to the piece and those tiny brass feet on the bottom of the insert fit perfectly inside the binnacle housing. I just think it has great appeal. The brass slide hinge is perfectly aligned and door opens and closes with ease. It definately was used. T is some kind of sooty black stuff inside the lamp, at the top of the domed vent. The patina is richly and evenly toned. A great deal of artistry went in to the crafting of this piece. The turned wooden handle on the bale is fine. Fittings are great, too. It just has the feel of a quality piece of early lighting. Might date this to around 1910 perhaps a bit later. Would make a welcomed addition to your Nautical/Maritime collection of for collectors of Early Oil or Kerosene Lighting. If you need additional pictures I am happy to assist. If you have any questions, I can call my good friend, C, to help. I shall wrap your Binnacle Lamp with extreme care and ship it to you within one day. The new owner is to pay $10.50 for Fully Insured USPS Shipping (sorry about shipping cost due to WEIGHT) within the United States. Buyers outside of the United States are to pay AIR PARCEL/FULLY INSURED unless another method of shipping is preferred due to location. All my THANKS! GOOD Binnacle LUCK! All Cheers, A-
