Antique Nephrite Jade Carving Toggle Goose Bird Swan

This carving was purchased in Hong Kong in July 1973 and came from my father's estate. He was a world traveler and avid collector of jade carvings and Chinese and Asian art.

Opaque nephrite jade in tones of pale warm gray and dark chocolate brown. This carving is a representation of a seated goose with its head turned to the left. The goose is symbolic of marital bliss. The carving style on this piece is more simplistic than other goose carvings my father owned. I am sure he bought it because of the color. He was always looking for pieces that exemplified the various hues and tones of jade. In working with this piece of jade, the artist used the dark chocolate brown portion for the front of the goose. Emphasis in carving was placed primarily on the wings, then the head, and lastly the tail feathers and tucked feet. A hole was drilled just underneath the beak at an angle, which makes it difficult to see in the photos. The shadow effect from the hole makes it appear as if t is a flaw in the jade, but this is not the case. The carving is in quite good condition. A natural fissure runs from the bottom of the carving up the breastplate to the base of the neck. T are a few spots on the breastplate area that were not completely rounded or polished smooth by the artist; you can see an ever-so-slight bit of angulation. The carving measures 2-1/2 inches in length and 1-7/8 inches in width. The stand measures 3/4 inch in height. Weight for the carving is 2.3 ounces and 0.6 ounce for the stand.
