Antique Nephrite Jade Carving Toggle Gourd Bat This carving was purchased in Hong Kong in November 1971 and came from my father's estate. He was a world traveler and avid collector of jade carvings and Chinese and Asian art. Semi-translucent nephrite jade in tones of white with pale gray-brown and caramel brown "skin." This carving is a representation of a large single gourd with one large leaf and bat. The bat is symbolic of good fortune, happiness and joy, and the gourd wards off evil influences and is also an auspicious symbol. The front side of the carving exhibits the lovely skin of the jade. The artist who carved this piece was wise to use the skin to augment the leaf and bat. T is extremely good detail to the bat and the single leaf. The curved gourd stem at the top connects with the leaf stem. When viewed from the side, you easily see depth of this carving as it protrudes outward. The back side is plain and unadorned. The beautiful, natural gourd shape is well balanced and very pleasing. Portions of the leaf and bat wing are visible to the left. The quality of carving is extremely good. This carving is in very good condition; t is only a very minor chip off the outside edge of the bat's right wing (see photo). If you have any questions about this piece, please email me prior to bidding. Serious bidders only. Thank you. The carving measures 2-1/8 inches in height and 1-1/3 inches in width; thickness is 9/16 inch. Weight for the carving is 2.3ounces and .2 ounce for the stand. 1102A
