A lot of levels that I buy are in very poor display condition. I enjoy returning them to respectability in hopes that other collectors might enjoy them. I have restored over 260 levels, and perfected the process as you can see by my feedback. I was going to completely restore this level, but I could not remove the screws that hold the horizontal vial. What I have done is to sand the top and bottom to remove 98% of the pitting, and replace one of the vials. This Davis No. 5 iron machinist level is a type 3 that you can read about on page 70 of Don Rosebrookâe(tm)s book, âeoeAmerican Levels and Their Makersâe The level measures 6 - inches long by 1 & 7/8âe" inches high by 7/8 âe" inch wide. The two brass plates read , âeoe THE DAVIS AND LEVEL TOOL CO. SPRINGFIELD MASS âe and âeoe PAT. MAY 29, 1872 , 1883 âe I did replace one of the plumb vials. They are both completely adjustable. The horizontal vial is a little off with regard to accuracy. The oxidation on the top and bottom is a little blotchy but within a short time it will turn to a nice patina. I will let the pictures tell the rest of the history on this level. Please see the other levels that I am also putting up for auction. As with all my level sales, if you are not satisfied, return the level within 14 days and I will refund the bid price. Feel free to e-mail read more
