You are bidding on a handsome antique or vintage oak and silver-plate tantalus that is designed to hold three decanters but comes to you with only two decanters. The set is definitely old, but I am not sure of its exact age. The oak and silver-plate caddy frame measures 13 1/2" long and 5" deep. The height is about 10" not including the handle and 11 7/8" including the handle. The square crystal decanters measure about 3 3/16" to 3 1/4" across and 6 3/8" tall without their stoppers. With the solid globe stoppers in place, the heights measure about 8 5/8" and 8 7/8". One seems a little taller than the other I think because one of the stoppers fits in further. The brilliant cut faceted stoppers seem to fit snuggly and perfectly, and I have no doubt that they are the original stoppers to the bottles. The stoppers measure roughly 3 1/4" long and 2 1/8" across. Unfortunately, t should be three decanters in the set but t are only two. The only markings on the set are the words "SECURE LEVER" impressed under the key. The crystal decanters are almost in perfect condition. I could find no cracks, hairlines, or significant chips. One of them does have a teeny tiny flea bit on the outside rim of the top, too minor to photograph. The bottles are crystal clear except for some slight traces of white residue inside on their very bottoms. I have not attempted to clean this out. The finish on the wood holder shows a lot of wear with some missing varnish. I think the stand would look dramatically better with a fresh coat of varnish. However, I leave that decision to the new owner. The silver plating is in good condition. I only noticed a little sign of wear on one of the central bottom cross bar. The handle at the top seems slightly loose. I tried to tighten the screws holding it on, but they did not turn easily so I decided it would be safer to leave it as is. One problem with the set is that the key does not seem removable but seems to be firmly imbedded in the key hole. I hesitate to exert too much force to try and remove it for fear of breaking it off. Because of the way it fits so snugly, I am not sure that the key is original. It was in the key hole when I purchased the tantalus. The silver-plate top piece locks firmly in place, and turning the key slightly counterclockwise releases the top so that it pivots or tilts back allowing the bottles to be removed. Since the key is not removable, it is not possible to leave the top locked so that no one can open it. I DO NOT SHIP TO ADDRESSES OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES.
