As a young boy I was given this mug by a lovely elderly lady who lived across the street from me in the Brewerytown section of Phila. I would run errands to the store for her every day. Mrs. Gandy was totally deaf, & when you rang the bell, lights also flashed in her house. What amazed me most was the fact that she had her house full of bird cages with singing canaries. She had six old shaving mugs on a shelf in her kitchen & I loved to look at them. The most beautiful had a big black horse on one side, & the Eagle on an American Flag Shield on the other side. She dropped it & had glued it back together. One day she said to me, " take these before I break another one". I've had them ever since. She said this one belonged to her Uncle John who was a doctor a long time ago. It was given to me around 1948. She said he was well-loved because he would make house calls at all times & in all kinds of weather. His name is still on the mug, but some of the letters are hard to read. I see the name as John Wallen, but the last name is hard to read. The colors of the horse, man & buggy are still bright, showing no wear. The gold trim at the top & bottom show a little wear. T is a fine surface crack on the inside of the top of the handle. It is not loose, & has no depth to it. I tried to take pictures of it, but the line didn't show up. The mug read more
