This carefully sculpted ivory religious statue of the Virgin Mary is an unusual and rare find.
Crafted in Asia probably around the Turn Of The Century, this pre-ban ivory piece has a beautiful smile and glowing face. Her robes are skillfully modeled to flow effortlessly to the billowing clouds she is standing on, and her hands are clasped in prayer. Measuring 4 and 1/2 inches tall and 1 and 1/4 inches wide, she is 5/8th's thick at her widest depth at her hands and nose. Quite heavy for a small piece, she has beautiful light graining exposed at her shoulders and the back of her head, and light un-even carving marks and t indicating hand work that is pre machinery mass production or that this piece is of a better quality than a lot of others. The finish is smooth, polished and slightly glossy, probably from years of handling. Mountd to a black painted wooden block by two metal pins or rods, this piece stands a total of 5 and 1/4 inches tall and is un-marked and has no splits or damage. A truly beautiful religious statue, this carving is probably Japanese and I believe of elephant ivory and was purchased from the estate of a local collector in the Atlanta area. Perfect for the follower of Catholicism or the collect of Asian carving and sculpture, this is a great find. Please ask any questions prior to bidding, as all auctions are final and returns are not accepted, just as you cannot return an item to an antique gallery, flea-market or auction house.
