~ 19th Century Pa Stoneware Blue Touch Crock~
Period/Date : Mid 19th Century (1860's-1870's) Dimensions : 8" Tall by 5 1/2 " Diameter on bottom ( 3/4 gallon) Materials : Salt glazed Cobalt Decorated Stoneware Origin :Mount Jordan Pottery, East Nottingham Township,Chester County, Pa Maker : Grier Description : This auction is for a cobalt decorated blue crock, made at mount Jordan Pottery, circa 1860's-1870's. It is dead mint condition with no flaws. extremely rare 3/4 gallon size. It has everything expected from a Chester county crock: thick cobalt sparsely applied, strong beige color with specks of salt still in glaze, one incised line, Albany slip glaze on inside with strong hand turning marks and nice red hue on bottom. This charming Pa Country Antique , is fresh from a Chester County Estate and has never been offered on ebay. The mount Jordan pottery was was started in 1828 by James Grier and it was contuinlsy owned by the Grier family until 1902. Mount Jordan potteries were very prolific and produced many various items in both stoneware and redware and employed many famous pa potters families like, Remmeys & Schofields. This crock was definitely decorated by a greir, it shows the classic pattern most noted signature of greir pattern consisting of 2 leaves. This rare crock has 2 than 3 leaves showing a bit of whimsy, that would be allowed, by hired decorators. Its pure and simple cobalt decoration is true folk art.
