The Yale & Towne Lock Company of Stamford, CT produced many styles of padlocks and continues to do so. Its founder, Linus Yale, invented the pin tumbler lock in 1840 and is considered the pioneer of modern American lock production. His pin tumbler mechanism remains today as the predominant system used in all locking hardware. From 1897 to 1925 they made two padlocks known as the 805 (large logo) and 805 (small logo). This excellent example of the small logo 805 is far harder to find, especially in the outstanding condition of this great example. The padlock measures 2" wide by 2 5/8"high. The small logo frame on the front and back measures 1 1/8 square. The case is made of what Y&T called "rustless cast iron" and indeed it is rustless. The shackle is of cast bronze with the Y&T company name and location embossed on the front and back of the shackle. This is a 4 pin tumbler lock that operates in an unusual fashion. The plug is actually an extension of the shackle heel and contains the bottom pins. The Y&T "club" or "clover" logo appears on the back face. The key is an original , operates perfectly and also has the Y&T pedigree stamped on it. The code number of the padlock, found on the face of the plug (by the keyway) is Y3248. This same code number appears on the key. There are plenty of padlocks available that look like this one; read more
