Additional high resolution images may be viewed at /Image-pages/Madonna_child.htm We are pleased to offer this stunning watercolor Old Master copyist painting after Antonio Bellucci depicting the Madonna and Christ Child. The artist is 19th century portrait painter and listed miniaturist Mary Ann Sharp (1803 - 1867) and is inscribed verso "Virgin and infant Saviour by Antonio Bellucci, copied by Mary Ann Sharpe". The work is not dated, however we believe this may be an early work by Sharpe; copying Old Master works has long been an accepted method by which young artists gain valuable experience and it is possible this work was executed as an academic copy during Sharpe's early years. If this is the case, the painting could be as old as circa 1825. The watercolor painting appears to be on heavy wove paper which has been wrapped around a composite board and then had an embossed gold metal trim added to the edge. This may be original. The frame is a lovely old early Victorian wood and plaster gilt frame. Framed size is 14 x 12.75 inches, unframed size 8.90 x 6.75 inches.
