AntiquePalais Royal Mother of Pearl Thimble w/ Pansy French * Circa 1820 This classic thimble is finely carved from a solid piece of mother of pearl and has gilded rings on either side of the band. It is about an American size 6 (13.5 mm diameter opening) and is slightly over 7/8" high. The front is inset with a gold enameled pansy seal. The condition is outstanding with no cracks, chips or other damage. Bridget McConnel shows this thimble on p. 73 of her book The Story Of The Thimble . The Palais Royal was an arcade of shops within a wing of a former royal palace in Paris. The shops opened in the late 1780s and housed the finest French artisans selling only the highest quality goods. Items of mother of pearl and precious metals were specialties there.
