Very old antique quilt. Definitely 1800's. Perhaps Civil War era. Measures 78 x 88 inches. Provenance on quilt is unknown as it was purchased at an estate sale and was found in a steamer trunk.
I am not a quilt appraiser, but I am a quilter. I have books on antique quilts and most definitely mid 1800s to 1890s fabric and style. According to Eileen Jahnke Trestain book on "Dating Fabrics," browns were very common as were double (cinnamon) pinks form the 1860 - 1880s. Also, the cottons in this quilt are being reproduced and labeled as Civil War reproduction fabrics by the quilting textile companies. Quilt blocks are an older pattern; unsure of name. Blocks are handpieced and measure 8.75 to 9 inches. Sashing is 3.5 inches. Hand quilted with stitches 10-12 stitches per inch. I estimate age of quilt based on older fabrics which are from the 1800s. Some double pinks, indigo blue fabrics, shirting fabrics. Note the old red bandana fabric in one of the blocks. Condition of quilt overall is very good. There are NO musty stinky odors. Quilt was well made and lies nice and flat. Neaty & tidy workmanship. Not a cutter. Note the green fabric on back of quilt. Batting is medium weight. Not lumpy. Issues are: Fabric is beginning to become dry (not brittle) with some deterioration in only 2 blocks (which I have pictured). Binding fabric has split from age along edge. No signs of wear or thinning along binding. Some of the brown sashing fabric has begun to weaken and "shred" which is only noticeable upon close inspection. There are some large dark areas on quilt, but not from dirt. Dark area can best be viewed on the photo of the quilt on the sofa. Look at top center. If I was to keep this quilt, I would definitely not launder it in a washing machine. Perhaps I would gently soak it in plain water in a bathtub and then let it dry flat on a warm day so as not to weaken fabrics by hanging while wet. Will gladly answer your questions. This is a true antique quilt for a collector and/or for someone who likes to decorate with primitive accessories. Buyer has choice of shipping methods. Insurance included. Will ship to confirmed PayPal address only. If not satisfied that quilt is as described, it may be returned if I'm notified within two (2) days of receipt (must have positive feedback of 25). Thank you to an expert quilter and collector, it is suggested that quilt fabrics may date closer to 1870s. Block has several names of which are: Johnnie Round the Corner, Single Wedding Ring, Wheel, and Rolling Stone based on the book, "Carrie Hall Blocks" by Bettina Havig.
