Antique Pennsylvania Dough Box - Cupboard Blue Milk Paiant DescriptionThis dough box is one from my primitive collection. I am down sizing, and have decided to part with this one. The dough box is an antique, that I had painted in a cupboard blue milk paint. When I purchased it, it had a lot of flowers from old greeting cards glued to the outside, and the only way to remove them was to scrape and sand the area, so I decided to paint it , and then I stained it for a time worn look. It is in excellent condition, and the construction is done with mortise and tendon joints. These you can see in the pictures. I have taken a lot of pictures, both outside and inside to give you a good look at the color. It measure's 29 3/4 inches long, 14 3/4 inches wide, and is 10 1/2 inches tall. Dough boxes were usually found sitting close to the cook stove so the warmth would let the dough rise. The lid protected the dough from the little hands that may have wanted to touch it, plus you were able to open the lid as the dough would rise. I think every primitive home should have a least one dough box. They are great to display wooden bowls, crocks, great for decorating at holidays. I like to leave the lid off at Christmas and fill it with greens, pinecones, and white lights. It also looks nice in a bedroom, with the lid tipped to the side and a quilt or coverlet hanging out.
