From Estate in North Texas: Antique, gorgeous, and very unusual, Mother of Pearl Perfume Set from the 19th Century composed of an ornate, gold washed stand of approx. 4 1/2" height mounted on a 2 1/2" diameter Soapstone base. Dual sided stand has a central, spring-loaded latch on top and cupped, 3 1/4" by 1 3/4" sides composed of Mother of Pearl. Sides are latched at top & hinged at base on central post with scalloped, octagon base affixed to the Soapstone. Pressing on the stylized, flying Eagle top of the post releases the Mother of Pearl sides via a cross latch, allowing both to drop away from the center (like an opening clam shell) to give access to an original pair of perfume bottles in metal holders. Both filigree metal holders are still in affixed on the center post, but only ONE (1) of the diminutive & original perfume bottles remains. Hand-crafted Perfume Bottle is empty (white residue?), appears to be of faceted crystal, and measures approx. 1 5/8" in height from flat base to top of the gold washed, flip-up lid. An outstanding & unusual Perfume Set by any measure, the material & construction techniques are almost certainly 19th Century with overall patina to match. T are NO cracks, dings, dents, or unsightly repairs visible on this Antique Perfume Set, though indeed one of the origional twin bottles is missing. Gold wash on delicate brass & steel parts is thinning and has darkened. Mother of Pearl sides are thin, quite translucent (See Photos with sunlight in background), and still scintilate with a rainbow of color when turned in the light. NO, we have never seen another antique set of this type in many years ... and you probably won't in a lifetime either! Just outstanding and gorgeous in any light, and absolutely unique by any standard. Were we collectors, we'd be tempted to keep it, but we are not of that persuasion.
