BEAUTIFUL FINE S. ANTIQUE ABRUSH PERSIAN 7X5 AFSHAR BIDJAR - CA 1930-1940 HISTORY: Although the small town of Bigar in the province of Kermanshah has hardly ten thousand inhabitants, the high quality of its carpets has gained it an international reputation. Concern for this reputation for high quality, had led to the clear distinction between the products of the BIJAR town workshops and the Tekab-zanjan. The characteristic weft technique used in the Kurdish BIJAR area has led to the term BIJAR_sturcture to describe the use of a single weft shoot, thick and tautly stretched after every row of knots. The strong tension of the weft pulls the warps into two layers, giving the carpet rigidity, although if handled carelessly or folded, it will crack and tear. Carpets with a BIJAR structure must tfore be rolled for transport. BIJAR rugs have a very unique weave using the symmetrical Turkish knot and double wefts, compacted very tightly, thus making them heavy and durable rugs. Designs in BIJAR rugs are difficult to define. They usually have all-over repeating Herati, as well as floras, arabesques, medallions and fish design. Bijar carpets do not only go well with antique furniture, they complement modern and contemporary furniture beautifully as well. The Herati (fish design), halvayee, floral(golfarang) designs are very common in Bijar rugs. You can also see some medallion and all over pattern with multiple borders.Bijar carpets are counted among the best Oriental carpets for everyday use with an extremely tough and rigid handle. Modern BIJAR workshop carpets are still of excellent design and construction. A very dense hard pile, cut medium to high, although old and antique finely woven pieces tend to be clipped lower.Warps are of cotton or, less frequently, goat's wool. Weft are cotton and both warp and weft yarns are tightly spun. In old and antique pieces warps and wefts are of wool. The majority of Bijar rugs have Turkish knots. However, Persian knotted pieces are also found.Bijar carpets and rugs are beautiful and t is high demand for them. This rug was hand woven in the city of Bijar in Iran. The rug was made of 100% kurk wool. The design of this rug is known as Fish Herati or Afshari Bijar. Very unique rug with birds and flowers on the border. This rug is very fine quality and it is in very good condition for the age with some low pile with KPSI of approx. 150 (see the last pic). The aprox. size is 7.0 x 4.3 feet. It has been professionally cleaned, no holes or stains, ready to use. If you have any questions please email me. Good luck.
