John Warne Pewter Mug Measure Vessel This is a pewter mug / tavern measure. It is 5 1/8 “ tall with a 3/4” footrim . It has "Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese 1667" inscribed on the front. On the bottom is inscribed "Wine Office Ct Fleet St" in script. It weighs about 1 lb. 5 oz. The base is 3 1/2" in diameter. It is 4 3/4" outside measure of mug to end of handle. There is a mark "pint" impressed within a rectangle to the left of the top of the handle, and a ¼” x 3/16 “ oval verification mark to the left of "pint." Photo 2. My research reveals that the maker’s mark on the inside bottom is of John Warne of Blackfriars Road, London, from the second half of the 19 th century. In the base is his mark of two hands clasped within an inner circle and his name in the outer circle. I took a pencil rubbing of the inside mark to study it more closely. Photo 4. The face inscription relates to the very famous pub, the Olde Cheshire Cheese, on Wine Office Court off Fleet Street, which was rebuilt in 1667 after the Great Fire. The Olde Cheshire Cheese is still there, and still a pub. Pub inscriptions of this type are common on 19th Century mugs, but this one is interesting because of the famous pub. According to , between 1826 and 1878 each town had a different verification mark to verify the capacity of the vessel. To stop the confusion a standard mark was adopted. The oval verification mark on this mug shows a crown, the letters VR, the numbers 67 and the letters LCC. It is read with the vessel turned upside down. VR refers to Queen Victoria and the numbers refer to the location. This piece has been in our family for several generations. I researched the following: Martin G. Roberts at www. , /John_Warne_of_London_and_family .... and sites.
