I believe this to be an original early Philadelphia fire mark. My research indicates that this firemark was first used in 1817 by the Fire Association in Philadelphia and nailed to houses that were insured by the company so that the private fire company would put out the fire.
are the specs on this piece: it is about 11 3/8 inches at its highest point; and 8 inches at its widest; it weighs 6 1/4 pounds and is cast iron; t is no foundry mark on the back side of the plaque. The following quote is from () "Fire Association mark dating 1817. Flat and made of iron, with a full stream of water gushing from a hose attached to an old time fire plug. The letters "F. and A.' were gilded, as were the plug and hose. The grass at the base of the hydrant was green." From my research, I believe this to be an original fire mark and not a repo. It came from an estate of a man who worked for the Philadelphia Fire Dept. I'm no expert, but I'm sure t are people out t who are. I want you to bid with confidence on this item. If by some chance it is not original, I will gladly refund your payment and shipping fees. Check my feedback--I'm more interested in my reputation than a few bucks.
