's an Antique 1895 Photo Print of a Great Lakes Steam Ship called the Chicora. It's framed in an Arts and Crafts Style Wood Frame. The Chicora was a Lake Michigan freighter that perished in the lake on January 21, 1895, with the loss of 23 crew and one passenger. This photo print is a tribute to the lost ship, and the 24 souls that perished with her. The piece documents the basic statistics of the ship: length 217 feet, beam 35 feet, draft 15 feet, etc. It also lists the names, positions, and home towns of all 23 crew members and one passenger. This is a very poignant listing. The Captian and Second Mate had the same surname, Stines, and both were from small town of St. Joseph, Michigan. Certainly they must have been related. Perhaps they were father and son. The Oiler and Coal Passer also shared a surname, Downing, and they were both from the small town of Lapeer, Michigan. Perhaps they also were father and son, or perhaps brothers. Most of the crew were from the towns of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan. But t were others from Saganaw, Lapeer, Detriot, and Chicago. Two others were from Philadelphia and Baltimore, respectively, and one was from Sweden.
