Super pictorial sampler by Amelia Sarah Fletcher dated 1850 and very scarce because of its subject matter - two black boys one playing a flute, the other holding a sign "Lovely Nancy". What the significance of Nancy is I don't know unless it refers to an ethnic folk song. I can't read the wording underneath Lovely Nancy - no stitching is missing from the lettering so what the lettering represents I don't know. The sampler measures a sizeable 19 inch x 21 inch out of its frame. The frame itself is very tatty & I would prefer to post without it, firstly to save massively on postage & secondly because I don't want to post a large piece of glass in case of damage. The sampler has been tacked to an old piece of cardboard which I won't attempt to remove it from. The sampler came from an estate clearance of an old lady's house in Lancashire and the back board to the frame bears a bearly readable label for a picture dealers in Anfield, Liverpool. Obviously it is well known Liverpool was once a central port involved in the slave trade and perhaps the sampler harks back to that ? The colours are very vibrant and the sampler is overall in very good condition with only minor wear to the extreme edges commensurate with its age. Would look superb when reframed in a suitable period frame by an expert. A very rare opportunity. The scans represent the sampler in & out of its frame. Postage price below represents postage within mainland UK, the sampler packed between two sheets of plywood without the frame & glass. International postage please email.
