Samplers just simply don't get much better than this one. It is one of the prettiest hand-made pieces of any kind that I have ever seen. It measures 10 x 23 inches (not counting the frame) and every single speck of it has a hand-stitched loop in it. The material that is the backing is the old kind of hand-loomed fabric material that was used for samplers. I took a picture of this in bright light so that you could see the magnificent stitching on it. The Cape Charles Lighthouse on Smith Island was build originally in 1828, remodeled, etc., and then completely rebuilt after the Civil War as it was completely destroyed during the War. This I believe is a rendition of the earliest lighthouse on that cape. Apparently it traveled around to family members. The back of it reads, "This picture is to be returned to Edna A. Willett at my death signed this day January 16, 1841 [1941?] Mrs. Eva Borce [or Borch?] Cape Charles, VA." I believe this says 1841 because that writing is not in any type of modern ink, really old charcoal lead. Really a super stunning picture. I am shipping it with the original framed, but would recommend having it professionally framed with protective glass. Thanks for looking and best wishes to you.
