You are cordially invited to bid on this very original antiquepond yacht. Note that this is the realthing - NOT a reproduction. This boat was imported from Germany by the W. Bingham Co.- a large wholesale hardware distributor located in Cleveland, Ohio. W. Bingham operated in Cleveland , Ohio between 1841 and 1940 and offered an extensive line of products for agriculture, mining and retail hardware stores. In addition, they were a wholesaler of good quality (primarily) German made pond yachts - many imported from Nurnberg . They featured wood and metal recreational pond boats that competed successfully with the more common Jacrim, Seaworthy and Keystone lines. This model, one of the largest in their offering, measures 26 inches length overall, has a beam of 6 inches and a height to the masthead (in stand) of 42 ½ inches. It was was introduced in 1931 and was removed from their catalogs in 1938. This rig represents a classic fractional sloop with high aspect main and club-footed jib. The hull retains fragments of bow nameplates that may have identified this model as the "Flying Dutchman" - but, that's a guess.
Several pond boat manufacturers, including J. Chien, Triang, and Marklin offered tin boats in the early decades of the last century and they were generally regarded as sturdy boats and good sailors. Bingham imported boats are less frequently found - especially in this condition. This one has a deep fin keel with ample lead ballast and a rudder integrated into the keel. The tiller steering is restricted by a wire traveler on the deck. Based on the large ballast and size of the rig, this one should be a "stiff" sailor - that is able to stand up to higher velocity winds than most. Unfortunately, few of these metal boats have survived as they were susceptible to corrosion if exposed to salt water. This hull is in remarkable original condition with no alterations to paint on the hull, keel or deck. T are numerous paint voids - especially on the lead ballast - indicative of a boat that has been sailed. The deck and hull topsides sport hand "grained" painting to simulate wood. Although the hull is intact and seaworthy, t are some spots of surface corrosion and paint voids and dents on both sides of the hull - towards the bow and at the chainplates. Please see the photos. Amazingly, the double shroud standing rig retains the original lines and original jack chain brass bowsers. (One forestay and the jib sheet have been replaced.) The sails are discolored, spotted and somewhat fragile, but have no holes or serious damage. The jib appears to be about the same vintage as the main, but is somewhat heavier and lighter in color. The mainsail sports the number "88". The rig is collapsible from the original hinged mast step plate. The boat comes with a well built solid oak cradle-type stand with removable end plates. This is a wonderful old boat with handsome lines and in good condition. It will make a fine addition to any serious collection of antique pond yachts. Please read my feedback.
