ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PORCELAIN POULTRY CHICKEN FARMER OCCUPATIONAL SHAVING MUG
~ WONDERFUL CONDITION ~
~ NO RESERVE ~
Welcome to the month of January, and the 2007 New Year. Being offered for your consideration, with NO RESERVE , is this wonderful Antique Porcelain Victorian Occupational Shaving Mug with a Poultry Chicken Farmer motif.
Occupational shaving mugs were quite popular during the Victorian Era of the late 1880's; the mugs were used by barbers to mix the soap and water needed to prepare a beard for shaving. With the advent of an epidemic of "barber itch", a type of skin eczema, barbers began keeping individual shaving mugs for their customers. Because of illiteracy oftentimes shaving mugs carries pictures of a man's trade or occupation instead of written words. Mugs were stored at the barber shops on specialized racks or in special cabinets with drain boards.
T were several different companies in the United States who specialized in the creation of shaving mugs; the foremost of those companies was the Koken Company, of St. Louis, Missouri. This particular porcelain mug is unmarked on the base.
The front side of the mug carries the likeness of an egg gathering basket and two metal chicken catchers.
This mug originally carried quite a bit of gold gilt trim; t is evidence that t were rose garlands on either side of the basket as well as lines of gold trim surrounding the top and the bottom. The name of the former mug owner was also hand painted in gold gilding underneath the basket; however t has been extensive surface wear to the gold gilding
The inside of the mug is undecorated.
Standing 3 ¾" in height, and measuring 3 ½" in diameter across the opening, this mug is in wonderful condition, free of any chips, cracks, flea bites, or repairs.
This mug has come from a smoke free estate collection and is odor free.
