I have for sale a great old painting. This painting was done on a piece of board or wood, and is quite old. It is a portrait of a young man and measures 15 1/4 inches long by 12 inches wide. I have no been able to find a signature on this painting so I have no idea who painted it. T is a tag on the back of the picture that says Day Otis Kellogg born 1796. If this is indeed a picture of Day Otis Kellogg he was born at Galway Saratoga County New York on August 7, 1796. He came to Troy in 1885 as Clerk in the Store of A & W Kellegg & Company. He was a member of the State Assembly, Mayor of Troy, Paymaster General of New York State Militia and US consul at Glasgow Scotland. The original Kelloggs were from Scotland and came to America soon aftere the landing of the pilgrims at Plymouth and settled somew in Massachusettes and were early emigrants to the state of New York. Their original name in Scotland was Kelloch and was changed to Kellogg when they came to America as was usual with new emigrants to this country. This picture has a slat of wood loose on the bottom section of this painting and it was originally attached with square nails which are still t Is not in like new condition (is very old) t are a few spots on it which I did not want to try to clean off in case it would cause damage and t are scuffs in the paint on this picture. The features on the face are quite nice, my pictures are not the best and most have some flash spots on them. I will try and get a better picture to add to the listing tomorrow in the natural light of day. If you should have any questions regarding this great old piece, please let me know Just to let you know if you are interested, I also accept money orders besides pay pal-thanks again
Sorry, I made a typo, he came to Troy in 1815 not 1885 (he would have been quite old) anyway, thanks again I have gone ahead and listed some more pictures taken in natural light. I have been asked some questions on this piece and thought that I had added the questions and answers but didn't so are the questions and answers. One person asked if this had been varnished, I believe that it may have, some spots are alittle shinier then others but if you touch it with your finger it will leave a shinier spot. Others wanted to see the back of the piece, It looks like the tag on the back of this piece has been replaced several time. The first tag was larger and appears that it originally was either glued or left dark marks, it appears that the original tag was probably retaped on at least one time and then it may have been lost and the smaller tag with info has been retaped on a time or two. The tape was fragile when I bought this piece so I placed a large clear piece over it to keep it on. Thanks again I have been asked another questions in regards to this picture and the person did not want me to list it so I am going to go ahead and let you know what the question was, wanted to know what the spots were on the picture. As I stated in the description, the whiter spots on the dark sections appears to be small scuffs or scrapes. The darker spots on the face, I am not sure. A few feel raised so may be varnish spots or over dirt, others maybe just age spots. I have no idea if they can be cleaned off or not as I am by far no expert on antique art. I appreciate all questions, thanks
