I've had a couple of old hay knives but never really purposedly collected them because, around , every farm sale you go to, you seen to always see at least one but usually four or five. Then I saw this one about 10 years ago and it immediately caught my eye. I had never seen one this old and I'm not sure t were any that were made earlier than this one. I'm no expert but I guarentee that this hay knife is very, very primitive. The handle is hand carved from one piece of word (I would guess either oak, ash, or hickory) and the entire blade is hand forged - I have no doubt about that! But what really caught my eye when I saw this hay knife was the way it was attached to the handle. The blade tapers to that 90 degree turn up and then another 90 degree turn into the handle. It goes completely thru the handle and then is bent back into the wood to hold it in place. I've never seen a handle attached in that manner. It's in, I think, very good condition for it's age but the handle has become a little loose with age and use. Someone, a long time ago, put a nail in the outside handle opening to try to tighten it up. I think you'll be able to see that in the photo. The only thing I've done to it is got most of the surface rust off of the blade and then put a light oil coating on it. On the handle, all I did was scrub it to get a whole lot of dirt and grime off. The hay knife is about 21" long so figure about $10 shipping if you wish to bid. If you have any questions, just ask. Thank you.
