This IS one of the MOST INTERESTING (and important) items we've ever seen! (despite it's losses). (our pictures just don't do it justice") T are SO MANY interesting details about this item I hardly know w to start: This item will truly WARM your Heart and INSPIRE your Imagination...Please read on: According to it's WONDERFUL period inscriptions: This Highly ROMANTIC item was a WEDDING GIFT in the 1800's celebrating the union of "Katai Keszult" to "Sandork Eljen" on "OKTOBER 30" (yes...in period style this is the wonderful way in which October is spelled!)... in the year "1803" -OR- "1813" -OR- "1823" -OR- "1873" -OR- "1893" ? We have not yet been able to decide what number the third numeral in the year date is. (see pics) Through research of period dating, perhaps you can decide. NOTE: At a first (quick) glance it appears to be the date 1893...but please study this third numeral further as we feel it is not a "9". Also the style of this piece (look and feel) most definitely seem to lend itself to a MUCH earlier period). 's the idea (design) behind the piece: Now that "Sandork" is a man and is marrying "Katai", he no longer needs his RAZOR... it is tradition in Amish, Shaker, (etc.) culture to stop shaving (growing a beard) upon marriage. BUT...instead of throwing away his manly companion (his razor), they have designed an intriguing "PUZZLE BOX" in which to contain it as a wedding gift (kinda ornery those old Shaker guys). This hand carved, highly decorative, intricate box has a secret... a secret process to unlock it. One that must be followed in precise order to access his (now forbidden) razor.... Will "Sandork" resist temptation?... Will he come to his senses by the time he finally reaches the razor?!?... Will "Katai" catch him in the act in the time it takes him to solve the puzzle!!!... Ohh the suspense is killing me!!!! (Really... this piece does in fact inspire thought of times past like no other we've seen. One can't help drifting back to a bygone century and wondering the fate of "Katai & Sandork" when holding it. Perhaps through research someone can learn their story ...WOW! WHAT A CONVERSATION PIECE TO HAVE SITTING IN YOUR HOME...Imagine sharing this story with your guest! Scroll Down For Pics... The Construction: Much time was spent making this piece for sure. Besides it's wonderful ingenious puzzle design, it is laden with beautiful hand carved intricate inlays some held in place by tiny, tiny hand carved wooded pins.
