The ground are dark; dark blue, cherry red and bottle green are common, which the colours used for the designs are very vivid and often include a delightful turquoise. Bidjar carpets appears in a wide varriety of designs, from central medallion, mina khani, arabesque, Herati and all over pattern. They are distinquished by their rigid and rectilinear translation of classical Safavid decoration. The exceptional thickness is due to extra length of pile, as in most heavy rugs, but to exceptional depth of foundation, from which emerge a short shape, erect pile and clarity of pattern that high and overlapping pile never produces. Bidjar carpets. Some have foundation of cotton, but the primitive ones mostly come with wool on wool foundations.
