ANTIQUE PINE WOOD CORNMEAL STORAGE BOX This is an old pine box that apparently was used to store cornmeal. Found recently in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it probably had a lift lid at one time as it shows no evidence that it ever had any hinges. Cornmeal was a staple in many southern kitchens as it is the main ingredient in spoon bread, egg bread, corn muffins and hushpuppies. The box measures 8-1/4" x 7-1/2" x 6" tall. It shows traces and/or drips of red paint on all sides including the bottom, rabbet joints at all corners and the word cornmeal printed on one side in red paint. Although this is a true primitive box with the usual dents, it is in good condition. T are a few surface cracks near the old round head nails on the bottom and significant wear all around the top rim. A unique primitive box to add to your collection!
