CIRCA 1850s-1860s PRIMITIVE HAND MADE WOODEN MATHEMATICAL PUZZLE I am Absolutely Charmed by the Primitive Mathematical "Toy" listed in this auction for a Hand Made Wooden (looks like Burled Walnut) Math Puzzle that was crafted in the 1850s-1860s era. If you are of "a certain age," as am I, then you remember seeing reproductions of this toy, miniaturized, plasticized, and hanging on key chains during the 1950s. I had no idea that the "original" idea for this piece dated back a full century! Please scroll down to see our photos and you will understand our excitement. This Puzzle measures approximately 4 inches square overall, while each of the numbered tiles is about an inch square. The tiles can be removed from the tray to form different puzzles. From what I remember of this game (I hate to admit to remembering a game that I played over 50 years ago!) when the tiles are arranged in a certain formation, each of the rows, both vertically and horizontally, will add up to the same number. Not trusting my rusty memory, if any alert eBayer remembers the "rules," and can provide gentle guidance, your assistance would be sincerely appreciated. The condition of this Puzzle and all of its pieces is very good to excellent. The wear is even, and t are no chips, cracks, or breaks to the wood that I can detect, nor do I see any restoration. read more
