You are invited to bid on this lovely antique royal commemorative cup & saucer, made by William Lowe of Longton, Staffordshire in 1837. This duo was made to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee marking 60 years of the reign of Queen Victoria in 1897. Both pieces are made out of fine white, fluted china, beautifully decorated with a transfer pattern that has been handcoloured. The side of the cup opposite the handle is decorated with a panel bearing the words "To commemorate the 60 years reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria June 20th 1897". Above is a crown and "Empress of India", and below is the royal crest and a banner reading "Queen of an Empire upon which the sun never sets". The shield is flanked by Union Jack and Royal Standard flags, and sprigs of English rose, Scottish thistle and Irish shamrock. Above are more flags, the Union Jack and the Red Ensign. The handle and rim of the cup are highlighted in gold. The saucer is decorated with three pairs of crossed Union Jack and Red Ensign flags sitting on garlands of more roses, thistles and shamrock, and with the dates "1837 to 1897" in the middle. The rim of the saucer is edged in gold. The cup stands 2.75" tall; the saucer measures 5.5" across. The bases of both bear the William Lowe backstamp.
