I call this The Rattle Snake Quilt Antique quilt made between 1875-1900 by an unknown quilter. The maker used bold, bright colors and a strong pattern, Pineapple Cactus with a center variation. Size: 61 inches by 78 inches and pictured on a queen-size bed. It is all hand-pieced and hand quilted, colorful and well-made with all cotton materials. Scrap fabrics were used to compose the cactus arms and a bright coral-colored ground was used, which has held it's color well over the ages. White cotton is on the back and shows minor damage. A thick cotton batting is used and makes a heavy-weight quilt, sturdy and warm. The binding has been replaced long ago with an indigo and white print cotton which has worn in a few places and was applyed with a sewing machine, which caused slight stretching to the edges. It's hand quilted in a medium stitch using an all-over, elbow-quilting pattern, which is also called Baptist Fan. It is in very good condition with a sturdy and rustic quality. There are four holes in the top about the size of a quarter where the bat shows, but the holes do not go through to the back. I have pictured them. It is sparkling clean and oder free, no stains or mildew and very little fading. No bleeding of colors. It is a wonderful example of an American country-made quilt made to be used everyday. It has been used, washed many times, and well cared for. It will be around for many years to come. The quilt is ready for mailing packed in a box measuring 21" by 17" by 6" and weighing 5 lbs 10 oz.
