UNIQUE RARE 'MATCHING' ANTIQUE NUMBERED COAL MINER'S TAGS
***** ***** ***** ***** *****
"This offering is for 8 antique miner's tags!"
You are viewing a group of wonderful bits of history. Coal miners utilized them as a safety measure. The tags were worn on the miner's hats and before each man went into the mine he would take the tag off of his hat and hang the tag at the entrance of the mine before he entered. The procedure was a way of tracking which miner was in the mine at any given time.
T are eight pieces in this group, four sets of 2 that have matching numbers. I do not know the significance of the matching tags. Perhaps one piece was for its original purpose of keeping track of which miner was in the mine at a given time and the other piece may have been a "tool check tag?". The tags are much older than the others that I have listed in the past and I am not sure of the metal content of these particular tags. They have a heavy patina and appear to be brass but could be copper.
The tags are all numbered and the larger pieces measure approximately 1-3/8 inches in diameter and the smaller pieces measure approximately 1-1/8 inches in diameter.
These tags would be of interest to anyone collecting historical mining memorabilia or collectors of vintage copper/brass items.... read more
