Antique quilt which has several names, President's Wreath or Bridal Rose Wreath. Red and green applique on 12 blocks with striped sashing and 8-pointed star corner blocks. Exquisitely sewn on muslin. All hand pieced, appliqued and quilted.
Quilt measures 74 x 86 inches . It is made of 12 blocks measuring 17 inches square. Sashing is 3.5 inches. Corner squares are 3.5 inches and are expertly hand pieced. I've taken many pictures to best describe. I have it displayed on my full-size sofa, a queen-size bed and outdoors. Hand quilting is 18-20 inches (both sides). Applique blocks are outlined quilted with cross-hatch quilting along border. The inner layer is not traditional cotton batting. It is thinner, perhaps flannel sheeting or another layer of muslin. Self binding which is brought over from back side (no wear to binding). Condition: No holes, no fraying, no worn or thinning areas. No musty odors. Muslin is yellowish beige (not white). Concerns are where the red fabric has run (see images). It appears fabric got wet and that is when the red bled onto the muslin. I do not believe this quilt has been laundered. Fabric feels like it has original finish. Slightly dry, not brittle. I tested other red and green areas with a wet cotton ball and some fabric dye was absorbed into cotton ball. Therefore, it is best that quilt be dry-cleaned when the time comes so as not to risk more bleeding. Quilt is not dusty or dirty. Probably in storage for many years. Quilt is NOT fragile. Fabric strong with no deterioration or weakening. Quilt shows minor brown age spots as to be expected. These do not detract. Backing shows age issues and two areas of where an attempt was made to launder (red ran through to back). Lays flat. I am not a quilt appraiser, however, I have collected and made quilts for years. I estimate this quilt to be over 100 years old, most likely from the late 1800s. My estimations are based on the pattern, fabric, color, , i.e., yellow center is a mustard yellow which was common in 1800s and not a fabric color in 20th century. Due to fact that color wants to bleed/run tends to date it to the 1800s time period. Color of fabric is a deep red; green is best described as a forest green; muslin is ivory which has yellowed over the years. Definitely, not a utility quilt. This quilt was made for display and to show off maker's sewing skills. I will gladly answer your questions or email other pictures up until last day of auction. I apologize that I do not know provenance of quilt as it was purchased at an auction. No reserve. Buyer has choice of Priority or UPS shipping. Please wait for invoice.
