Up for auction is a refinished antique flattop trunk with the 'liftomatic' feature not often seen. This feature allows you to retrieve items from the bottom of the trunk without removing the tray, which can be quite convenient. The tray is original to the trunk, however a new bottom was installed because the original was made of a card stock material which was discarded. This is a large trunk measuring 36" long, 21" wide and 23" high. It can hold a lot of stuff. New handles have been securely installed and with the original rollers in place, this trunk, though large can easily be moved around. All the metal on this trunk has been hand burnished, but we did something a little different this time. Some of the rust was left on here and there. Plus a little paint on the sheet metal was also left and then we added our own concoction to the metal, giving it all a nice patina with kind of a bronzy tone. The metal was then sealed with poly. If you could see this trunk in person you would probably agree that ,yes this is the way metal should be done on old trunks to preserve their antique character. Why buy an old trunk if you want it to look brand new? This four step process is an alternative to the gold paint that you see slathered on some refinished trunks. The wood was sealed with four coats of sealer, two brushed on and two wiped on. The top of the trunk was given several more coats in the event this trunk would be used as a coffee table. The flat top would make this an excellent choice to just that. The top of this trunk is made of an early plywood which was introduced about 1905. Early plywood was quite rough and this can be seen in a couple pics. The extra coats of poly and a lot of sanding has smoothed out the top nicely and whats left is quite flattering to the trunk. The top also has a few stress cracks, which is quite normal in these old trunks and actually adds to the look. The top also had some flex so we stiffened it up by adding two thin oak boards to the underside of the lid (see pic). The bottom of the trunk was primed and then painted with two coats of a quality black paint so you should never have to worry about the bottom getting rusty. All told this is a very nice example of an early flatop with quite a bit of hardware and a good lock and working key, in fact the lock locks with a nice click. It may be the nicest trunk of all the trunks I've done. This trunk would compliment any room. I ship to the lower forty-eight by Greyhound bus so check your nearest station before bidding.
