Antique English Earthenware Teapot
Relief Molded & Under-glaze Painted This is cheery teapot! It has nice proportions and its restraint of molded decoration and under-glaze touches of bright springtime colors lend a lighthearted elegance. There is a mark in relief under the bottom that looks sort of like a slanted backwards "Z" ; an "S" is probably what it is, though I do not know this mark. I think the teapot was made in the 19th Century. From the late 18th through the early to mid 19 century English potters made a variety of somewhat similar wares, some of which were especially popular in America and exported there. This piece has a relationship to both types mentioned under the article's description of Pratt Ware. I'm not an authority on this subject, but I do think the teapot is an interesting form of clear glazed antique English earthenware. As for the condition there is and it is hardly an issue, a tiny chigger on the spout's left side and the inside of the top opening along the flanged area has a minor roughening from a few tiny blemishes. To me this is hardly unexpected and in fact I see it more as reassuring evidence that the piece has good age! I think the condition is remarkable for this teapot which was not very costly at the time it was made and therefore one you might expect heavy use was quite possible. Look at the pictures and I think you will get a pretty good idea of the condition. If you think of any questions to ask I will be glad to discuss this piece with you. Height is 9-1/4".
