(H&J 4327) This is a RARE, antique Rogers & Bro. triple-plated silver salt supported by three griffins, circa 1850, according to 5000 Open Salts . (One on-line research source says this firm was established in 1858, another says 1860, so please bear in mind these dates are approximates, and are subject to change as additional research results and updated information is obtained.) It bears the Rogers & Bro. hallmark, plus the number 18 (see photo 10). On one side there is a beautiful scrolled monogram that reads "WM_", but I am not certain of the last letter...could be an S, could be a P, could be an L (see photos 7 & 9). It is easily displayed with or without the monogram showing. The round bowl is supported by three attached, highly-detailed, full-body griffins. Their tails extend under the bowl all the way to the center (photo 8). This is in extraordinary condition. I found no dings and no wear to the plating. I gave it a quick surface polishing so that the details would be easier to see in the photos, and it shined up beautifully. The 5000 Open Salts Rarity and Price Guide lists this as Rare. Whether this is 1850, 1858 or 1860, it is still a wonderful, old, beautiful display piece, and would be a super addition to your salt collection.
