We are delighted to offer you this fine old antique rose golf filled and/or plated reverse intaglio carnelian gemstone pocket watch fob, or pendant, in very fine vintage condition! I just love these nifty old fobs, as you may have guessed by the dozens i have listed over the past 2 years! :) The glowing warm color of the translucent carnelian stone, and the awesome reversed cameo of these ancient mythological gods and warriors just rings my bell! And, they make swell pendants for the younger crowd today....as anything old or vintage is all the rage among these fine young people! This piece is in really good condition, with no chips, cracks or scratched to the beautiful gemstone, and minimal wear to the rich rose gold finish on the bale and bezel! This treasure measures 1 1/16" long and almost 1" wide, 15/16" to be precise. It weighs 4.0 grams. Both sides of the carnelian stone are slightly domed, with the front , of course, having the reverse intaglio tin. The character depicted faces to the left. He wears a sturdy armored helmet, equipped with wings, which identifies him as Mercury, or, Hermes, the messenger of the gods! Hermes was his Greek name, and Mercury is what the Romans called him. He himself was of high birth, being the son of Zeus and Maia , according to legend. He was a prankster, which got him into lots of trouble with the other deities, but him charm often helped turned the tide of favor back his way.. He was helpful to gods and men alike, once rescuing Zeus from Typhoeus , as well as watching over the shepherds' earthly flocks, and escorting the souls of the departed to the underworld. Also associated with athleticism, grace and strength, he is the patron of the Olympic games , and his statue stood at the entrance of the stadium at Olympia. Thank you for your interest!
