The monumental Art Nouveau figures, statues and centerpieces created right around the turn of the century by Royal Dux are among the most sensuous and evocative porcelain creations of all time, in my opinion. Amphora like finishes, utmost attention to detail and a true understanding of the female form make these groups truly remarkable and unmistakable. This one in particular is most fascinating in that it is extremely rare, unusually large even for Dux and it is of investment / museum quality and condition . In addition, it is signed by the modeller, Xavier Raphanel which is not only a plus, but also quite unusual. Let’s take a good close look. At nearly 24 inches tall (over 60 cm), one can’t take it in all in at once. One or two more important factors: First, it’s a vase form, and that too is unusual. Second, it weighs 12 lbs. 13 ozs. ( 5.8 kgs ) I’m sure she had a name, but I’ve not been able to locate even one more example. Let’s call her “Shepherdess with Sheep” or maybe even “Bo Peep.” She likely held a wooden staff or a shepherd’s crook originally. A few, very few, Royal Dux statues held a wooden accessory of some sort, but I’ve only seen pictures of them. In over fifty years monkeying around with antiques and art, I’ve not seen a single one in person. They were generally lost or tossed sometime over the last century. It has little if any impact on either value or impressiveness. See those little protective felt pads? You may have seen important pieces of porcelain, glass and sculptures on my little eBay site before with those on them. That’s because I’ve been buying important pieces from a well known southern collection for about three or four years now, and most all pieces in the home are protected in that manner. That’s one reason her pieces have remained in such fine condition. (She is methodically downsizing, which tickles me to death. T is no way in the world I could have bought it all at once.) The applied pink triangle is t, of course, but you’ll also note the Mould number “19-92.” Then t is the run number “23.” It’s possible, I reckon, the mould number might be 19 and the run number 92, but I don’t think that’s the case. I’m betting a true Royal Dux aficionado will be able to help us out a little with that. Hope so anyway. And t is the modeller’s signature on the back - Xavier Raphanel at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:" Show me a barefoot gal in a slinky-thin dress with a lustrous sheen, and I’m pretty much hooked. You’ll also note flowers, berries and the full trunk of a tree running up the length of the vase. And don’t forget the sheep! (or if it's Bo-Peep, it is her little lamb.) CONDITION: In a word, “FINE.” I can’t find a chip, ding, scuff, crack, hairline or anything else objectionable. She’s led a protected life. That in itself is nothing short of miraculous. If I wandered off into gushiness and t, I’m sorry. It can’t be helped. I’m out t every single day in search of elusive treasures, and actually finding one is a real thrill . . . . . . especially a nature girl with the looks of an angel and a figure that would make even the most obedient dog break his chain. Without question, I guarantee you’ll be absolutely th...
