DESCRIPTION DESCRIPTION :Here is a rare opportunity for you to own a fine original D. Rudge & Co Highwheel bicycle also known as an Ordinary or Penny Farthing. Rudges were widely regarded as one of the finest bicycles available in their day and are highly sought after today. The Rudge Racer was the favored mount of many racers who racked up numerous track records in it’s saddle. One of the most famous of these “cracks” was George Hendee, the American Amateur Champion of 1883. He rode a 52" Rudge to victory numerous times on the Springfield Track in Springfield Massachusetts. In the early 1900s, Hendee founded the Indian Motorcycle Company. Finish appears to be original as original makers markings on neck are crisp under the enamelMatching serial numbers 18210 on the hubs, bearings, neck, and mounting step This bike retains much of its original glossy black enameling and is in rideable condition. Bright parts appear to retain a fair amount of original Nickel and have been over-painted with silver paint at some time in the past. I can see no problems whatsoever with backbone or forks. I have included head on and rear views which show that there are no alignment issues. Profusely marked D Rudge. I have found the D Rudge mark on the rear hub, bearings, and neck. Neck stamped "D.Rudge & Co. 18210 54" making this a 54 inch wheel. Pedals are marked Bown's Aeolus Pat. May 18, '80 Overman Wheel Company Chicopee Mass USA and are in great condition with replaced blocks. Saddle has been redone. Missing a few spokes, but runout of wheel is fine as is. This should be an excellent rider as it is an all ball bearing machine and is mechanically and structurally sound or it will display wonderfully as is. This a perfect candidate if you wish a show restoration as well I was told years and years ago that a company in the US imported these Rudge ordinaries without pedals and saddles and so equipped them here. That would explain the Victor pedals and saddle. This fine machine is listed with a reserve which is at or near the part-out value. I will gladly answer all questions. Bid to own, do not suffer from runners up remorse! Not to be confused with hard tire safety safties or with Victor and Columbia Light Roadster Expert ordinaries or G & J Gormully and Jeffrey American Champion, New Mail, this machine is in the lineage of Singer Yale and Coventry machines which were at home on the North Road back in the day. This was originally a Boston machine likely from the early days of the League of American Wheelmen or the Cyclist Touring Club of America.
