This unique Romanov-era pin is like a gold musical sculpture in the round: the miniature gold violin and overlapping cello are completely three-dimensional and further enhanced by a sheet music segment in nielloed silver. The brooch was presented by the Moscow Trio (see note below) in 1900 and made in that ancient Russian capital. The reverse is inscribed in Cyrillic: From the Moscow Trio, 1899-1900 and signed with the musicians initials: D.S., D.K. and R. Ye for D. Shor, pianist, D. Krein, violinist and R. Erlich, cellist (see image 2). The pin attachment is stamped 56 , the Russian gold standard for 14k in zolotniks with Moscow assaymasters initials for Ivan Lebedkin, and Cyrillic maker's initials V. G. . The base is fitted with a gold hook probably for a watch pendant. The brooch measures 1 3/4 in. (4.5 cm.) across, 3/4 in (1.9 cm.) long and is in good condition. Sold with description if requested, and brooch gift box.
