This vesta case in the form of a satchel with original imperial Russian matchbook is a wonderful example of Fabergé's versatility. He has transformed a pre-revolutionary pigskin leather matchbook cover with a simple flourish of gold accented by a cabochon sapphire. The Fabergé origin is confirmed by the gold hallmarks on the inside of flap: Cyrillic M. P. , for Fabergé's famous head workmaster, Michael Perchin, 56 the Russian gold standard for 14k, and the Cyrillic initials of St Petersburgs assaymaster (gold-tester) from 1898 and 1904, Yakov Lyapunov. The interior matchbook, an original from St. Petersburg, is inscribed in Russian V.A. Lashina, Safety Matches in the front and, Store on corner of Gorokhonaia and Sadovaia Streets, Serebriakova House, Nos 33-41, St. Petersburg on the back. Closed leather matchcover measures: 1 5/8 x 1 1/4 x 11/16in. (4.1 x 3.2 x 1.7 cm) (l x w x d); gold mount measures 1 1/4 in. (3.2 cm.) across. Gold mount and sapphire in very good condition, leather edges a bit worn. Matchbox with normal wear. Michael Evanpievich Perchin (1860-1903)
Born in Petrosavodsk, Michael Perchin was one of the only Fabergé workmasters of Russian origin; the majority were Scandinavian. As master craftsman in 1884, Perchin set up his own shop in St. Petersburg and, two years later, became head workmaster of Fabergé's workshop. Noted for his roccoco and Louis XV style, Perchin created at least fifteen Imperial Eggs for the Tsars, including the 1891 Memory of Azov Egg, the 1900 Trans-Siberian Railway Egg and the 1903 Peter the Great Egg. Until his untimely death at the age of 43, almost all Fabergé's major commissions by the Russian court, including the Imperial Eggs and other official gifts were by Perchin* Own a piece of history from one of the world's most renowned jewelers, Carl Fabergé.
