JOY OF THOSE WHO GRIEVE WITH COINS Icon Size 5 1/2" wide x 7" long With Frame 8" wide x 9 1/2" long Mother of God is depicted in whole-length symbolizing the Ecumenical Church . Before her t are people who grieve and suffer from ailments and life troubles. Two figures at the low corners are usually identified as Old Testament Patriarchs Abraham and Isaac and King Solomon. Two angels appear next to the Mother of God. The original icon made it's apparition at XVII century when it healed the sister of Russian Patriarch Joachim. The lightning once struck the Temple of the Imperial Glass Manufacture in Saint Petersburg . Copper coins, the alms of the poor visitor to the Temple had flown through the air and in a miraculous way attached themselves to the Icon and that gave it the new name. Their images can be seen in the picture. This old icon was painted at the end of the 19 century. The wooden panel was covered with levkas (gesso, special priming). Levkas was hand engraved and covered with the Gold leaf. It was then painted with egg tempera. The icon wasn't restored. It is original. Condition fits the age and can be seen in the picture.
