It was perhaps the most dominant artistic and architectural movement that shaped the appearance of today St. Petersburg. The first interest to Ancient Russian icons appeared in the end of XIX century. Tsar Nicholas II stimulated the creation of the icon-painters Chirikov and Gurjanov, who painted in the medieval manner. But that was an outward imitation of Old Russian art without any inspiration and without trying to understand form and content, so most talented icon-painters working in the manner of mixing styles. in the late of 19th and early 20th century, icon was painted in the mixing of styles: Neo-Classicism, Neo-Russian style, Realism, Academic style, Modern (Art Nouveau). Russian Artist Victor Vasnetsov built the fanciful style of early Russian Art Nouveau Mikhail Nesterov, russian painter, follower of critical realism, master of religious painting. He was a deeply religious man and he combine his Orthodox beliefs with the Art Nouveau style of the time. In his attempt to revive religious art he was influenced more by French Symbolism than by old Russian icon painting. Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel is a Russian artist and icon painter of remarkable talent, he was the founder of Russian Art Nouveau style. From end of 19 century until now, it is a lot of questions: Is theological education necessary for icon painter? After all: what price of icon is equitable? Is it necessary to copy medieval icons or to seek own style? Could an icon painter carry into an image his personality and his interpretation? And what is Canon in church art? Where are its margins? The problems of theological character always was and exist now for every iconographer.
