This listing is for an exceptionally nice S & S Co. oil lamp filler dating to the 1890-1900 period - shaped like a little fat pumpkin or gourd. It's been my impression that S&S was a brand name associated with Sternau, but I'm honestly not certain. I've had a couple of fillers and an alcohol burner --- all bearing the S&S name. The quality (weight of metal, etc.) is on a par with Joseph Heinrichs. As you'll see from the photos the filler's condition is pretty excellent, and it is fully complete with working thumb pump, spout cap, and chain. It has a couple very tiny bumps that are probably too small to show in the photos, and one larger bump near the handle that I only saw this evening for the first time (so you'll know this isn't too noticeable either). Sitting on a table it's on the underside of the body. I've captured this in the last photo which also shows that the brass handle doesn't meet the body, but it is strong and firm. In terms of size, this filler stands only 4 inches high and measures 9 inches from handle to spout. Re: fillers -- if you're looking at this listing, you undoubtedly know that these little guys are comparatively hard to find today. I suspect when oil lamps and serving pieces with alcohol burners were retired, the lamps were either converted to electric or stashed away for emergencies while fillers then had little use, so they were likely retired to the workshop to be used as oil cans or thrown away. Anyway, this piece is really is a nice addition to a collection of oil lamps or fillers; and, of course, they're always a conversation piece as 999 out of a 1,000 people won't know what it is.
