Hall started a business of constructing safes.
In 1867 he organized an Ohio corporation by the name of Hall's Safe & Lock Company,
Hall was the president, , until he died, in 1889. In 1892 the Ohio company sold all its property, including trademarks, trade rights, and good will, and its business to form the Herring-Hall-Marvin Safe Company.
Edward C. Hall, a son of the founder, became President of the new corporation. . Another son, William became the Treasurer and a son-in-law the Secretary. Both sons resigned and left the corporation in 1896 and formed an Ohio corporation, under the name of Hall's Safe Company , (note the missing "LOCK &" in the name.)
Herring-Hall-Marvin protested the implied use of the Father's fame and it went to THE U.S. SUPREME COURT.
