She described the place as, 'lovely, grand, romantic, and a great peace and wildness pervades all, which is sublime.' She also spoke fondly of the locals who 'never make difficulties, but are cheerful, and happy, and merry, and ready to walk, and run, and do anything'. Balmoral Estates was purchased in 1852, and plans were drawn up to build a new castle on the site near the old castle. Prince Albert took a great interest in the design and construction, which began in 1853, with the main structure complete and ready for occupation by September 1855. From that time on, at the end of each summer, Victoria and Albert returned to their beloved Balmoral, and each time, as the Queen wrote in her journal: 'My heart becomes more fixed on this dear Paradise and so much more so now that all has become my dearest Albert's own creation, own work, own building, own laying out, as at Osborne: and his great taste and the impress of his dear hand, have been stamped everyw' After Albert's death in 1861, Queen Victoria spent more and more time at Balmoral with its happy memories and opportunities for solitude, visiting in May and for up to three months in late summer and autumn.
