Antique SETH THOMAS Lever Escapement Ships Clock Movement - Rare - Working: Up for auction is an Antique 8-Day, spring driven, Seth Thomas Ships Clock Movement. This movement is from a recent find from an estate in Massachusetts and t he movement had been wrapped in paper and stored away for many years which has helped the movement remain in wonderful condition. When I brought the movement home I removed it from the paper, wound the winding arbor gently with the key that was found in the box and gently set the balance wheel in motion and the movement has been running ever since. This is a time only movement with a subsidiary seconds bit and a fast / slow adjustment lever and though the movement has been continuously running since I have had it in my possession , I do not have a pair of hands that fit the center arbor therefore I cannot say for certain how accurate the timekeeping of the movement is. The jeweled movement is clearly marked on the lower portion of the back plate with: SETH THOMAS THOMAS TON, CONN. N in European script. It is also marked in the center of the same plate with the following: ST MADE IN U.S.A . The movement also has a serial number engraved on the brass plates in two separate areas and the serial number on this movement is as follows: 44693 . F urthermore, I can also see another ST MADE IN U.S.A. marked on the inside of the movement on one of the plates. The solid brass movement is in relatively good condition given its age. I've dusted off the movement with some light compressed air but I have not polished, cleaned or oiled the item at all. From the pictures you can see light tarnish in various areas (which would clean away quite easily and polish nicely ) and other than these areas of light tarnish, the heavy brass plate, gears, wheels and other components of the movement are in very good condition. The balance wheel is in excellent condition and the mainspring appears to be in good condition as well. The teeth on the escapement wheel are in excellent condition as is the pallet fork and arbor however the regulator does have some light surface tarnish / rust on it. The movement fits perfectly onto the solid 7 1/4" diameter dial plate (found with the movement) however there were no pins that secure the dial plate to the movement so these will need to be replace. As you can see by the blurred escapement wheel and balance wheel in picture # 5, the movement is running and I guarantee that it will run for you but again I cannot guarantee the timekeeping accuracy because I have not tested the movement with hands. This early Seth Thomas Ships Clock Movement would make for an excellent replacement piece or a perfect movement to be used for parts.
