A Tunbridge Ware sewing casket
Netley Abbey Tunbridge Ware Sewing tools Sewing cabinet Tunbridge Ware A Tunbridge Ware sewing casket with a depiction of the ruins of Netley Abbey by moonlight to the lid, circa 1870. This exceptional cabinet could also be described as a miniature piece of furniture. A Japanese (Pagoda) influence is evident in the design. Not only was it made to high standards, it has been fully restored and the sewing compartments relined by one of the most respected and skilled restorers of Tunbridge Ware. The domed lid, showing Netley Abbey with a border of roses lifts (once unlocked) to reveal the sewing tool storage area (spaces for pins, cotton reels, cotton winders, thimbles etc.). The double doors, with Tunbridge Ware decoration of roses bordered by a geometric design, open to show three drawers (cedar carcasses) that are veneered with birds-eye maple, as are the backs of the doors. Geometric Tunbridge Ware decoration runs along the centre of the drawers. The top is 10.1 inches/256 mm wide, 8.1 inches.206 mm deep and 8.3 inches/210 mm high approx. The main body/ carcass of the cabinet is veneered with ebony and coromandel. Tunbridge Ware of this type was produced as souvenirs by Victorian entrepreneurs in the historic town of Tunbridge Wells, a spa town whose origins may be traced back many hundreds of years. Many of the timbers used in the manufacture of Tunbridge Ware are indigenous to the local area.
