This is a lovely old woodblock print by Harold Haven Brown. We believe that this is one of his earlier pieces. We found his signature on line. It was on another woodblock print and pencil signed as this one is. We cannot say that this is his signature, but it looks identical to the other one. We have not had this authenticated, but we believe it has every indication that it is an original work by him. We did have someone with knowledge of art look at it and she felt it was authentic. It is a six color print of the U.S.S. Constitution 1812, as shown on the back (written by someone other than H. Brown). The frame is nailed and not in good condition. The paper back is also in bad shape. Under the paper is a cardboard back held by nails to the frame. We don't want to remove it because we don't want to risk tearing the print. We believe the black is painted on the back side of the glass. The print looks to be in very good shape. We are not art experts and are trying to describe this to the best of our ability and let you decide. Harold Haven Brown was born in Malden, Mass. in 1869 and died in 1933 he was a painter, illustrator and woodblock printer. From 1914-1921 he was the director of the John Herron institute in Indiananoplis. The print is oval and measures 71/2 inches by 91/2 inches the frame is 131/2 inches by 113/4 inches. Thank read more
