Fine English Victorian needlework sampler by Mary McCartney, 1845. In a beautiful original rosewood frame. Silk on silk with an unusual feature of animal pictures included as well as the usual alphabet (upper and lower case), numbers 1 through 12 and a prayer. The prayer reads: Guard me oh GOD from ev'ry sin, Let Heart & Tongue & Life be clean, Tho' with ten thousand Snares beset, I never will my LORD forget. Initials of family members are arranged in what appears to be a family tree type way around the animals in the lower half of the sampler. The animals are: a goat, gun dog, a sheep, laden donkey and prancing horse. The internal dimensions are 12 and 7/8th of an inch square (33.3 cm x 33.3 cm). The frame dimension are: 18 and 5/8ths of an inch (47.5 cm x 47.5 cm). There is slight foxing and a light sootiness round the edges, the fabric has taken on a light sepia tone quality. The colours have faded somewhat, but the overall effect is evenly distributed. There are two small holes but they are only noticeable on close inspection. One is to the right of the prancing horse the other is tiny and close to the internal frame. It is an object of beauty and the imperfections just seem to add to its realness and history. This is my girlfriend's piece that she inherited. Serious inquiries only. This item is located in Sittingbourne, Kent, England and will ship from there, tracked and insured.
