‘The Silver Chest' A Victorian Silver Coffee Pot London 1901, made by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Weight: 29.4 ozt. / 912 grms. Height: 22 cms. / 9 ins. Length: 24 cms. / 9.5 ins. Diameter: 16 cms. / 6.25 ins. If you are going to serve coffee from a silver coffee pot then this is to the one to impress your guests with. This will serve ten cups and more, it is a real heavyweight at just under thirty ounces and was built to last another hundred and ten years. Made in circular bellied form with the lower body embellished with raised fluting and sitting on a plain pedestal, it rises up to a flared rim which has been decorated with a foliate gadroon border encompassing the face of an angel, The lid has raised fluting to complement the bowl and is topped by a carved fruitwood oval finial. The handle, also beautifully carved in fruitwood, as a leaf capped scroll with a reeded detail running down the outside. Finally, rising from the base, the spout has been decorated on the outer face with a forest of rising acanthus leaves and on the inner face with a foliate decoration set on a matt background. It balances beautifully and pours perfectly, even at that weight. The finest skills of Victoriana silver tableware are clearly evident and it looks absolutely glorious on the sideboard.
